Who we are:
In the Episcopal Church, the Vestry is the governing body of the Parish.  Vestry members are elected by the Parishioners to serve as a part of the representative decision-making body.

There are 8 elected positions on the Vestry, including the Senior and Junior Warden.  A Vestry term of service is 2 years.  A Parishioner may serve 2 consecutive 2 year terms.  At Durham Parish, the Senior and Junior Warden positions are elected from within the Vestry by the members following the election.

The Treasurer and Registrar positions are not positions on our Vestry, but the individuals in these positions may be nominated and elected to the Vestry.  Both the Treasurer and Registrar normally attend the Vestry meeting to give reports, provide information, and voice ideas and opinions.  These positions may not vote unless the individuals have also been elected to the Vestry.

The Senior Warden is usually the primary elected lay leader of the congregation, and serves as a principal liaison between the Parish and the Rector. The Junior Warden is often given responsibility for the upkeep of the parish buildings and grounds. The Senior Warden typically presides at vestry meetings in the absence of the Rector, and the Junior Warden presides at vestry meetings if both the Rector and the Senior Warden are absent. In case of clerical vacancy, the Senior Warden may be the ecclesiastical authority of the parish for certain purposes.

The Rector attends the Vestry meetings and leads the Formation section at the beginning of the meeting.  The Senior Warden leads the remainder of the meeting following the Agenda.  Agenda items are submitted prior to the meeting and a composite Agenda is distributed to all members prior to the meeting.

Any Parishioner may attend a Vestry meeting, but prior notice is appreciated.  If a Parishioner wishes to speak at the Vestry meeting they must give prior notice and be placed on the Agenda.

The Vestry election takes place at the Annual Parish Meeting held the 1st Sunday in March.

Eligibility to become a Vestry member is defined in the Parish Bylaws

If you are interested in becoming a Vestry member please contact the Rector, or a current Vestry member.
