Prayer Shawl Ministry

The School Backpack Program is sponsored by the Daughters of the King (DOK).  Through their collection of food and their close coordination with Mt. Hope Nanjemoy Elementary School, they are providing food for children when they go home for the weekend.

We have worked with the Malawi Club Foot Program in the past.  Last year a family in the Parish hosted a fundraiser to raise money to help a clinician work on his education.  We have now adopted this program as one of our focus Mission projects.

Several years ago, a gentleman representing an Agency now called Unbound came to address the Parish.  His voice of compassion and the information he shared led us to "adopt" a young man from Guatemala.

Loving God,  Loving Our Neighbors,  Changing the World

Long ago, The Ladies Mite Society began delivering food to some local people in the community that needed some assistance.  Millie Hamman asked Joe Plemons to create a Food Pantry to help the many people in the area that are in need.  Joe thought about it and back in 2006, after seeing the poverty in the Nanjemoy area he decided to help us do something about it.  He started the Food Pantry, dedicated in his name, that has served people in need in this part of the County providing food, sometimes clothing, and at Christmas time toys.  Even though Joe has passed on, his legacy and compassion lives on through this ministry.

This new ministry will be a group effort of Parishioners to knit or crochet prayer shawls.  The finished shawls will be blessed in the worship service and then distributed to people that are sick, shut-in, recovering from surgery, or other life situations where comfort and prayer are especially needed.  They will be given to people in hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or even shut-ins.

At Durham Parish, Outreach is at the heart of our Ministry.  Our programs help our local neighbors in need just down the street, and our neighbors that struggle and live across the world.

Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) is a reputable non-profit organization that enables us to reach out to our neighbors around the world.  Whether it is relief from a catastrophe or development of a new water system, they are there - and we support them!

LifeStyles of Maryland provides assistance to those in need in our community.  This non-profit organization provides a number of services including the SafeNights program.
