Late in his career, St Paul, then in Corinth, wrote a letter to the Christians in Rome, and he entrusted it to a deacon named Phoebe for delivery. Paul had never actually been to Rome, but in his letter he summed up a great deal of his wisdom and accumulated understanding of Jesus' mission and ministry.
Our Sunday morning lectionary will be offering us readings from Romans all through the next church year (starting in November).
We are going to explore that letter in our Adult Forum time through several different lenses over the course of the next several weeks.
First up in our study is a work of historical fiction by biblical scholar Dr. Paula Gooder. We will read and discuss her book, Phoebe (Hodder and Stoughton, 2018). The book is available (but only in the UK, unfortunately) for listening to on Audible and used copies are readily available online.
We will also watch and discuss Dr. Bart Ehrman's take on Romans in the Great Courses video lectures, read some essays, and check out some of The Good Book Club's materials on Romans, depending on interest.
Adult Forum
Summer 2022 Adult Forum: We are resuming our pre-service adult education time with a combination of video lectures and literary sermons. The video lectures are from the Great Courses series on the Old Testament by Amy-Jill Levine, and on the New Testament by Bart Ehrman. The sermons are by George MacDonald. The theme is a focus on the summer's Sunday morning scripture lessons.
We meet at 9:15AM in the Parish Hall. All are welcome.
